Apparently an SSD is more sensitive to malfunctions in the cable than an HDD, which would explain why the original HDD worked and the SSD didn't. it turned out a faulty SATA cable was the issue. My drive didn't work inside the computer, and after recloning, reinstalling etc. The QuickInstall Guide isn't useful at all, but the video on the Transcend website might be useful to some. Installing this was supposed to be easy, but you really need to do your research online (read some of the reviews here) before you start. The expense of the drive was worth it, since it is noticeably faster, even if it's not lightning fast. For me, this time boot had no strange messages, and all has been good. Felt is a poor heat conductor and I had it on hand - it worked well.ĩ. In my Macbook, the drive was able to move a bit, so I stuck three small felt "feet" on the top (the kind you put on the feet of a chair to keep it from damaging the floor), and that made it snug. Attach the SSD where the old drive was attached and screw the anchor bar back in. I don't have a video link for this one, since I was able to figure it out.Ĩ. To unseat the old drive, you just need to unscrew and remove the top anchor bar and gently detach the drive. When it's powered off, unscrew the USB drive again and remove the SSD (I had to unscrew both top and bottom for this step). At this step, I opened my Adobe CS apps in the SSD and activated them, then made sure they all could open and save documents.ħ. If it doesn't, no worries, since you haven't actually removed your "old" hard drive yet - so if there's a problem, you can re-boot and still get your old drive as usual. Double check you really are on the SSD - in the Apple at the top left, select "About this Mac" and make sure your SSD is shown as the startup disk. This was unexpected and nearly gave me a heart attack, but I rebooted again without making a selection and this time it booted perfectly.Ħ. At first, I got the Apple "system recovery" message, asking me if I wanted to restore my drive from backup or re-install OSX. Close everything and reboot - the instant you hear the chime, hold down the "Option" key and select the SSD in the USB drive - it may show the "parent" drive name instead of the name you picked, so hopefully you took a note of it in step 3ĥ. Mine contained numbers like 10.10.3, and this is what I had to choose the first time booting, before it showed the name I had chosen for the drive.Ĥ.

take note of what the full name of the drive is. Cloning took about 7 hours for my 900+GB drive, which was using 430+GB.

The other default settings are already what you need. In Carbon Copy Clone, select "Partition 1" - this makes the whole SSD your new hard drive, which is what you want. download free trial of Carbon Copy Clone, name your SSD (example, "Macbook SSD") and clone your hard drive to the SSD

If you do, you can not de-activate or re-activate without help from Adobe, and they assume you are a criminal software stealer - they won't help until you're sobbing suicidally.ģ.

IMPORTANT!!! If you have Adobe CS software, you MUST DEACTIVATE IT PRIOR TO FOLLOWING NEXT STEPS !!!!! For safety, select the option that allows you to re-activate on the same computer. Unscrew the bottom of the USB drive, seat the SSD, and connect the USB drive to your Mac (video: )Ģ.

Here are the steps I took to install it:ġ. Heed other reviewers - you should throw the instruction book away.

The kit is well packaged and comes with everything you need, even the super-small custom screwdrivers. Everything is definitely noticeably faster, but I wouldn't go so far as other reviewers - it's not lightning fast, at least not when it opens Adobe CS6 applications.

This is now installed in my 2011 17" Macbook Pro with retina display.
